Cascade Daily Report

Stage 2
Report from David Godfrey, Team Rubicon

Sorry it’s late. I had bikes and bottles to clean, flats to fix, dinner to make, dishes to clean, etc, etc….

Started a little warmer. Yesterday it was a little overcast so the temp stayed a little cooler, but today it is nice and hot with the bright blue sky.

EB (Early Break) today consisted of Glen Chadwick and Scott Z They built up a good 4+ min. lead. But like always…..

After the turn at Sisters to start the climb up McKenzie Tree Farm (Ryan Trebon), Matt Cook and SC closed the gap first. The gap was down to about 45 seconds now so it didn’t take long for them to catch the break. Scott Z dropped off first leaving 2 Navigators, one BMC, and one very tall skinny guy (We know who that is).

It all came “together” again finally. Well at least at the front it did. At this point up the final climb, the field was all spread out. Sucessful Living guys (who were on the front all day setting a very fast pace) were dropping like flies along with pretty much the rest of the field.

I don’t know how it all turned out. Tuckerman was in a group with Douggie. Logan, Brad, and Dan all finished with the “pack” which is great because they had a huge chase of their own to getting Tuckerman back into the field at 30+ mph after a flat.

Secret Training with the guys in Orange

Ever wonder what keeps the boys in Orange going so fast? Well it's their Monday Night secret training rides that include a stop at MIO Gelato house for two scoops of gelato in a sugar cone.

Monday

Hanging out at the Olympic Training Center

A month or so ago Dean was invited to train with the US National track team for two week at the Olympic Training Center. He has been keeping an update on his blog site as to what it's actually like to be at the Olympic Center, lifting weights, riding and eating right with top athletes from all sports.

Heather VanValkenburg is in a hurry.

There are sixth-graders to teach. There are weights to lift. There are sponsors to find. There is fine tuning to do, on track and off. And, there are races to win. Big races. National championship races. World championship races. Heck, if everything fell into place, there might even be an Olympic race in her future.

Boys in Orange go one, two, three

David and I needed to get the yard under control so we gave the guys the team credit card and told them to go have fun at Elkhorn, little did we know that they would come back going 1, 2, 3 in the FICA National Stage Race Championships.

Carlsen wins Tabor

55th Annual Mt. Tabor Circuit Race -

The course is a 1.3 mile, hilly circuit race that has 137 feet of climbing per lap; now times that by 30 laps and you have a tough race (4110 feet of climbing)! Rubicon sent 3 of it’s roadies to this event – Aaron Tuckerman, Kirk Carlsen and Logan Hunn.

Mt. Hood Cycling Classic

Stage 3 - May 31: Cooper Spur Circuit Race, 87/66 miles

Today was another hard day in the saddle, riders where still reeling from dehydration from yesterday’s stage and it showed. Riders started dropping off the back of the bunch 15 minutes into the race, one rider, two riders, then three, we lost about 10 riders in the first 10 miles of the race. Then we hit the base of cooper spur and the field took no time to string out into single file.

Who knew Cindrella wore cycling shoes!

Aaron Tuckerman and Team Rubicon hold on to take 3rd over all at the Tri-Peaks Challenge.

After the time trial the team was sitting in 2nd place behind Healthnet. Today’s stage was all or nothing. I don’t have much information but what I do have, it all happened with in the  last 15 miles of the race – Logan and Kirk spent a lot of time in the wind shielding Aaron from it and making sure he was up front with the top GC guys. The last 10 miles were smoking fast as Toyota United, Healthnet and Jelly Belly put the pressure on. Speeds where clocking in over 30 mph on the flat spots just before hitting the base of Mt. Nebo.
